Strathblane Primary School Parent Council
Nominations for members of the Parent Council for the school years: 2009-2011
Applications for Parent Council Meetings Clerk
Background
The current members of the Parent Council have been in post for nearly 2 years, the maximum allowed before needing to be re-elected. As most, if not all, will be standing down this July, there is a need to seek new members to carry on the work that has been developed so far or to develop new ideas to promote our children’s educational experience while at Strathblane Primary School. Also there will be a vacancy for the (paid) role of Meetings Clerk, as Bronagh Ewart will demit office from the end of this school year.
Since Parent Councils were set up 2 years ago, the emphasis has been on trying to increase parental involvement in the various activities in relation to the education of their children. These range from the various fund-raising events, such as the Halloween Disco or the Summer Fair, through project work, such as MUGA, producing healthy snack guidelines, developing after school activities (languages, Science Club, sports, etc), to working with the school and beyond on matters relating to education policy, such as the Curriculum for Excellence.
There is practically no limit to the number of issues or activities that Parent Councils can get involved in, much of which can be very satisfying in seeing progress being made. Of course, it does involve a real commitment to working with others who might not always see eye to eye on everything, but who are there for the benefit of our children. Working with parents, teachers, Stirling Council, and not least the children, offers exciting opportunities and challenges. It should not be the case that being on the Parent Council means you have to do everything, as a key task is getting other parents to make a contribution, however small, in relation to their interests and available time.
What happens next?
The Parent Council Constitution states that any parent/guardian/carer of a child at the school (hereafter called ‘parent’) may be a member of the Parent Council. There must be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 7 members (excluding co-optees), who will be elected by members of the Parent Forum; i.e. all parents. Existing members of the Parent Council may stand for re-election if they wish. Any parent may apply to be the Meetings Clerk.
All parents can self-nominate, or, if they are nominated by someone else for the Parent Council (not Clerk), they will be approached by the current Parent Council to see whether they would be happy to stand for membership. If there are more nominations that the maximum allowed, elections will take place across the whole of the Parent Forum. Otherwise, nominees will be deemed elected to the post.
We now invite nominations for the Parent Council for the next 2 school years, 2009-2011, as well as applications for the Meetings Clerk, and we have made a closing date of Friday 5th June 2009. If anyone would like to stand, or to nominate another parent, please let one of the Parent Council know, either in person, or by emailing: strathparentcouncil@googlemail.com, or by leaving a note addressed to me with the School office. A nomination form is attached.
